<p>2003: The Year That I Learned the Truth</p>
<p>I injured my back in 2003 and was unable to walk let alone run.  I had always been a die-hard workout fanatic and was unable to exercise for the first time in 15 years. No injury happens conveniently, but this one was really poorly timed. I had just bought tickets for a trip to Mexico with 4 other friends and we rented a beach villa in a prime spot on the Gulf of Mexico.  I had 5 months until the trip and was injured so badly it hurt to stand.</p>
<p>Since I Couldn&#8217;t Workout, I Dieted Hard</p>
<p>At this point I was hoping to lose about 10 pounds of body fat, but without exercise I figured I was out of luck. So I had to look to my diet. I had to count calories and watch what I ate. I didn&#8217;t really think it would work, but I was willing to try anything. In the past I lived on the treadmill leading up to a vacation or for summer.  Cardio was my ticket to a lean, ripped-looking body and I was sure that diet alone would do the trick.</p>
<p>I Dieted Down to 8% Body Fat in 3 Months</p>
<p>As you can imagine, I was such a fitness junkie, I was already pretty low on body fat. So how was I going to keep losing body fat? It gets even trickier from doing this with diet alone.  So how did I accomplish this?  My plan consisted of a protein shake at breakfast and lunch and then a salad with rice wine vinegar and grilled chicken for each dinner. It was a bland way to eat, but it worked well.  Every now and again I splurged on an apple as &#8220;dessert&#8221; but I resisted doing this very often.</p>
<p>How To lose Body Fat Through Calorie Counting, Not Exercise</p>
<p>Learning how to create a huge calorie deficit through controlling my diet was perhaps the best lesson I learned through this entire experience. Most of us are told we are allowed 2,000 calories a day. If you only eat 1,200, you have 800 calories cut, which starts melting the body fat.  Think about it: how much exercise would you have to do to burn 800 calories? I am just using this figure as an example, you don&#8217;t need to put yourself through such a big deficit.</p>
<p>Obviously Exercise Will Help When Maintaining Muscle</p>
<p>The only negative part of cutting calories to lose body fat is that it is hard to keep all of your muscle mass, though the lean protein will help. You won&#8217;t lose a lot, but you will lose a little, if you are unable to do even basic exercise or training while you are on this diet. Eventually you concede the fact that it is what it is, and approach the day trying to ignore the stares of everyone around you.   </p>
<p>It is then time to get to your job.  Even though your job does not require too much physical activity, even the slightest activity turns your face a bright red from the effort.
